The Department of Women and Child Development is one of the major departments in the district, implementing the programs for women and children. The main objective includes social and economic development, health and nutritional status of pregnant and nursing mothers and children. Through medias and public functions, health and nutrition camps and mothers meeting create awareness among rural women to improve overall living conditions. Integrated Children Development Scheme (I.C.D.S.) covers the entire district, except for Khammam (Municipality) and Khammam Urban Mandal. Activities are conducted like pre-school education to children between 3-6 years and Supplymentary Nutrion Programme for all eligible (6) months to (6) years children and pregnant and lactating mothers for (300) days in a year. Frequent health checkup is also conducted by the Medical Officers and complete immunization is done to all children.

All the services are provided through the Anganwadi Centres and in total, there are (2324) Anganwadi Centres and (840) Mini Anganwadi Centres in the district.

 


Infrastructure:
  • 1041 Departmental Anganwadi own buildings.
  • 6 Administrative buildings.
  • 14 ICDS project office buildings.

IT IS PLANNED BY 2005 A.D. THAT NUMBER OF MALNOURISHED CHILDREN SHALL BE REDUCED TO BELOW 10% AND THE NUMBER OF GRADE-II AND IV CHILDREN ARE LESS THAN ONE PERCENT.


PROGRAMMES

A Significant centrally sponsored scheme viz., Indira Mahila Yojana (IMY) has been recast into an integrated programme for women's empowerment and has been renamed “SWAYAMSIDHA” or the integrated women's empowerment programme (IWEP).

Swayamsidha is a Self Help Group based programme with emphasis on convergence of all round empowerment of women, creation of confidence on issues relating to women's status, health, education etc., by ensuring their direct access and control over resources through a sustained process of mobilization and convergence of all of all the ongoing sectoral programmes. It is implemented in ICDS Project, Madhira.

SERVICES PROVIDED IN A.W. CENTRES

Maintenance of survey register on population in every Anganwadi Centre's keeping records of births and deaths of children and deaths of women during pregnancy and delivery.

Ensuring immunization and health check-up of children and pregnant mothers

Weighing of children and maintenance of growth chart to ascertain the nutrition status of children.

Nutrition Food is supplying under Supplementary Nutrition Programme to children below the age group of (6) months to (6) years and nursing and expectant mothers from low income families in (10) ICDS projects. Ready to eat food is supplied to the ICDS project, Khammam and Tirumalaipalem.


FROM 31.01.2004 COMMUNITY MANAGED SUPPLEMENTARY NUTRITION PROGRAMME IS STARTED IN ICDS PROJECT KUNAVARAM

 

Pre Schools with all teaching and learning materials for children of the age group of 3-6 years.

Monthly for mothers to make them aware about health, nutrition rearing, hygiene and sanitation.

Referral services for children on health and nutrition grounds to health centers.

Anemia control programmes
