NATIONAL RURAL EMPLOYMENT GUARANTEE SCHEME - ANDHRA PRADESH, KHAMMAM DISTRICT

 

            This is a historic initiative mounted by the present UPA Government. Government of India contributes 90% and the balance 10% is contributed by the State Government. It guarantees employment for 100days in a year to every rural household near their habitation. The Guaranteed employment to anyone and every one across the country has been attempted for the first time since independence in our country.

 

            Guaranteed manual employment to unskilled labour, equal wages for equal work for men, as well as women, elimination of middlemen as well as heavy machinery from the works so executed and tracking every rupee from the headquarters all the way up to the worksite so as to maximize transparency and minimize leakages are the avowed objectives of the programme. When population is engaged in meaningful works around their habitation, distress migration witnessed in the past especially during lean seasons is expected to be minimized.

            The estimated population of agriculture labour as on 01.01.2009 in Khammam District is 4,12,989. Under NREGS, 72984 works have been taken up involving an amount of Rs.  475.40 Crores. 3,36,69,791  Mandays have been created. It enables 7,97,526 Persons to get meaningful engagement near their habitat without any social dislocation.

            NREGS has ensured that not single family from Khammam District is forced to migrate outside in search of work. This has been verified during successive Prajapatham visits undertaken by all elected public representatives including MLA during summer seasons of previous years.
